4th stage cancer patient gets new lease of life

Panchkula: 50 Years old man treated successfully with fourth stage of oral cancer by Dr. Rajan Sahu Sr. surgeon oncology department at Alchemist Hospital recently.
Patient Uma Dutt resident of Nahan (HP) who was suffering from fourth stage of oral cancer was lost all hopes of being well but the strong will of the family and efforts of Dr. Rajan Sahu and his team comprising Dr. Himanshu plastic surgeon and well equipped anesthesia team operated the patient and removed the tumor successfully from both side of neck.
Dr. Rajan Sahu said that the cancerous growth involved floor of mouth, anterior tongue and mandible.   Patient was operated upon removing entire floor of mouth, about 75% of tongue, part of lower jaw and lymphnodes were also removed from both sides of neck for complete tumor clearance.
Reconstruction of the defect was done using flesh from chest wall and mandibular reconstruction was done. Temporary tracheostomy (an opening in neck which helps in breathing) was done. Patient recovered uneventfully and leading normal life with his family. Now he is free from tracheostomy and eating normally through mouth.
His recovery has sent a message to the cancer patients, that cancer if treated properly is curable though needs regular follow up with doctor.
Dr Sahu further said that smoking, chewing tobacoo, khaini, zarda are the main causes of cancer. In last two years many such cases of oral cancer have been treated successfully at Alchemist Hospital.
