Panchkula: Neurosurgeons at Alchemist Hospital Panchkula performed
a challenging brain surgery on an elderly patient. Dr Harsimrat Bir Singh
Sodhi, Consultant Neurosurgery
Patient Kirtan Kaur, resident
of Yamunanagar was admitted to Alchemist Hospital with complaints of weakness
of right side of body along with headache. She was bedridden for three
months and was diagnosed to have a large brain tumor on left side of brain,
compressing the underlying brain tissue.
Dr Sodhi informed that tumor
was completely removed without injury to underlying brain. The total operative
time was less than two hours; patient was electively ventilated for just three
hours post-surgery and was shifted out of ICU next day. She made a good
clinical recovery including improvement in weakness on the right side and was
discharged in healthy condition on 5th post-operative day.
Dr Sodhi further explained
that surgery at this age entails special risks in view of low cardiac and
respiratory reserve. Additionally, minimal blood loss at this age can have
adverse outcome, which was significant in this patient since the tumor was
highly vascular and there was a risk of extensive blood loss. With proper
technique and good operation theater setup including high end microscope, this
bleeding from tumor was well taken care of and total intraoperative blood loss
was less than 500ml.
Dr Shilpa Chauhan Senior
Consultant, Anaesthesia at Alchemist Hospital, who played an important role in
the case said “safe anaesthesia is
always challenging, especially in a 81
year old woman where body measures are already
compromised. But with the best of super specialty support, well equipped OT
with best machines and well dedicated ICU team, we feel happy and proud for the
best recovery”.
Proud of you Dr. Sodhi
