Panchkula: Coronary
bypass surgery using LIMA-RIMA-Y Total Arterial Grafting remains the ultimate
and most advanced technique of achieving long term freedom from coronary blockage
& reblockage.
Dr Shashi Jindal, Senior Consultant & Head of the Department
of – Cardio Thoracic & Vascular Surgery (CTVS), in Alchemist Hospital said
that bypass surgery is a technique of re-routing the blood to the heart muscle
around the blockage. In a conventional technique of bypass surgery we use leg
veins to reroute the blood .However the life of these venous conduits is not
much and it does match with the life expectancy of young patients thereby
requiring re do bypass after 8 to 10
years. So here is an
advance technique which we are using to perform bypass called LIMA –RIMA – Y in
which arterial grafts are used instead of venous grafts that will sustain for
18 to 20 years and virtually eliminate the need for 2nd bypass any time
in life. And also there is no need to cut open arms and legs in this technique.
This is a demanding operation requiring highest level of
surgical skills and training . Only 4% surgeons in USA and 11% in U.K and very
few in INDIA are trained to perform this procedure routinely. But this surgery
is routinely performed in Alchemist Hospital by the team of skilled doctors
without any extra cost.
Cardiac ailments are on fast rise in India and rest of
the world. There is a rapid change in the pattern of coronary artery disease
all over the world. In the sense that disease is occurring much early in age and
losing its gender male preference. So there is a needs for switching to
treatment strategies that can offer long time disease free life.
