A minimally invasive
surgery using video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) to remove a tumor
which was located inside the chest close to the heart and lungs was performed
successfully at Alchemist Hospital recently.
The 62-yr old male patient who was a chronic
smoker for 40-yr have a complaint of cough & chest pain from 4-month. At
Alchemist he was diagnosed with a Thoracic Neurogenic tumor of size around 10-cm.
The tumor was located inside the chest on right
side close to the lungs and heart. VATS and tumor excision was performed and
the patient was discharged after two days, said Dr. Kanwarneet Singh, consultant surgical oncology, Alchemist hospital who performed surgery.
He said further that normally these tumors are
treated with open thoracotomy surgery which involves long incision over the
chest, Painful postoperative course, ICU stay, long stay in hospital and long
time to achieve a normal state.
In VATS, we use small incisions and a camera is
used to operate. Recovery is very fast and pain is minimal. VATS is a recently
developed advanced technique, he informed.
Studies have shown that VATS is superior to
traditional techniques in term of pain and patient recovery and is non inferior
in oncological outcomes.
VATS) is a type of
thoracic surgery performed using a small video camera that is
introduced into the patient's chest via small incisions.
The surgeon is able to view the instruments that are being used along
with the anatomy on which the surgeon is operating.
